Understanding Bird Problems in New Zealand

Birds can be more than a cheerful backdrop to a Kiwi morning — in many homes, businesses, and public spaces, they become pests. Pigeons, starlings, sparrows, and other bird species often roost on ledges, rooftops, and gutters, where their droppings cause damage, create hygiene issues, and pose health risks.

New Zealand’s urban and coastal environments provide ideal nesting spots for birds. When left unchecked, bird populations can cause property damage, block drainage, corrode structures, and even create slip hazards. Effective bird control is essential for long-term prevention and maintaining clean, safe premises.

How to Choose the Right Bird Control Method

Getting rid of birds or preventing their landing requires a holistic approach. Here’s how to decide which solution is best for your situation:

  1. Identify Your Bird Problem

    • Are birds roosting, nesting, or merely flying through?

    • What species are they? (Pigeons, seagulls, sparrows, etc.)

    • What areas are affected? (Roof, ledge, outdoor seating, garden)

  2. Determine the Right Control Strategy

    • Non-lethal deterrents: Use laser repellers, scare cannons, or reflective tape to discourage birds from settling.

    • Physical barriers: Bird netting, spikes, and discs can block access completely.

    • Chemical or sensory repellents: Use safe, odor-based deterrents that repel rather than harm.

  3. Choose Treatment for the Location

    • Roofs / ledges: Heavy-duty netting or stainless-steel spikes.

    • Open outdoor areas: Scare cannons (solar, mechanical, or electronic) provide active deterrence.

    • Indoor or confined spaces: Diffusers or repellent discs for closed environments.

  4. Maintain & Monitor

    • Reassess key roosting points regularly.

    • Replace or reposition deterrents as birds adapt or become desensitised.

    • Clean surfaces to remove droppings and reduce attraction.

We have had some customer feedback for the Bird Scare Cannon - Mechanical which they've told us it has been useful on wild dogs, but we haven't done this testing ourselves at this stage. Elizabeth M. — 10 February 2026

I placed these Predator eyes along with bird scare tape on my Black Doris plum tree. My family laughed and said the tree looked tacky. But I didn’t loose a single plum to birds.Brilliant!

Yvonne P. — 26 January 2026

This is a great product. We had a problem with neighbours cats visiting and causing havoc in our garden. Got two of these, one for the front and inside the garden. So far no cats for the last two weeks.

Jon P. — 8 January 2026

Product works as advertised. Communication was a little lacking once order had been placed due to the product being on back order. BUT, communication was very reliable & efficient after enquiring about delivery times. Would use again.

Bruce — 6 January 2026

I would describe this product as a brilliant idea, but poorly executed. It does scare cats, but is difficult to set up due to drawbacks in the design. In summary: (1) It is triggered by the movement of plants in the wind. It should only be triggered by warm bodies. (2) The sensitivity dial is too sensitive. The range 0 to 9 is more 0 to 3. (3) No timer. I had to buy a tap timer to control when the unit is active. I only want it active at night. (4) The solar panel is a great idea, but not helpful if you want to locate the unit at the back of the house. It would be helpful if there was an option to have a long cable to allow fixing the solar panel at roof level. (5) The connections leak, but can be fixed with plumbing tape. (6) The spray arc is too high and can shoot over a fence. Reducing tap pressure helps with (5) and (6). Only half a turn of the tap is needed.

Anonymous — 2 January 2026

Honestly should have bought this right from the beginning! Nothing worked long term to keep these nuisance neighbouring cats who refused to use anything that resembled a normal kitty litter in my garden. DIY , commercial sprays etc, they just got used to it . I like this because of the sensitivity levels other repellers don’t have, which means it won’t go off unnecessarily if you don’t want it to. Actual physical deterrents are needed I found to effectively deter cats. Chemical / smell deterrents are a waste of money and time .

John Hacking — 26 December 2025

Seem OK although I have got them in a public place and they kept getting pulled down until I covered them in Vaseline!

Hey there! Ask me anything!
