Possum Control Products | Repellers, Deterrents & Baits | Pestrol NZ
Possums are one of New Zealand’s most problematic pests — causing damage to fruit trees, vegetable gardens, native plants, roofs, insulation and even birdlife. These nocturnal invaders are intelligent, persistent and highly adaptable, which means controlling them requires a strategic, multi-layered approach.
Pestrol NZ provides a comprehensive range of electronic possum repellers, ultrasonic deterrents, solar water-jet systems, physical barriers and possum bait pellets designed specifically for New Zealand conditions.
Why Possum Control Is Important
Brushtail possums are not only a nuisance — they cause serious environmental and property damage:
- Stripping fruit trees and vegetable gardens overnight.
- Eating young native plants, flowers and bird eggs.
- Damaging roofs, spouting and insulation when nesting in ceilings.
- Disturbing pets and people with noise during the night.
- Spreading parasites and diseases.
Because possums travel long distances and return to the same feeding sites, early and ongoing control is essential to prevent long-term problems.
Pestrol’s Possum Control Solutions
Ultrasonic & Sonic Electronic Repellers
Electronic repellers such as solar-powered yard units and indoor/outdoor animal repellers emit ultrasonic and sonic frequencies that create an uncomfortable environment for possums without harming them. They are ideal for:
- Homes and gardens.
- Roof spaces, sheds and garages.
- Fruit trees and vegetable gardens.
- Driveways, rural blocks and lifestyle properties.
Most devices detect movement and activate instantly to deter possums before damage occurs.
Solar Water Jet Repellers
Solar water jet repellers are a highly effective, humane method for keeping possums away from gardens, lawns and outdoor entertaining areas. A built-in motion sensor detects movement and triggers a sudden burst of water, startling possums and training them to avoid the protected zone.
They are perfect for:
- Vegetable gardens and flower beds.
- Fruit trees and orchard rows.
- Driveways, pathways and lawns.
- Commercial or rural entrances.
Physical Deterrents: Spikes & Barriers
Possum spikes can be installed along fences, beams, pergolas, gutters and other access points to physically prevent possums from climbing and entering certain areas. These barriers are simple, long-lasting and extremely effective when combined with electronic repellers or water jets.
Possum Pellets (First-Generation Bait)
Pestrol supplies first-generation anticoagulant possum pellets for responsible possum control. Because they are first-generation, possums must consume multiple feeds (overdose) — typically resulting in death within 4–10 days.
These pellets are suitable for:
- Rural and lifestyle properties.
- Fruit orchards and shelterbelts.
- Forestry margins and conservation areas.
Always follow label instructions and use approved bait stations to help protect pets and non-target wildlife.
How to Choose the Right Possum Product
1. Possums in the Roof or Around the Home
If you hear possums on the roof or find droppings around the house, use a combination of ultrasonic repellers pointing towards access points and spikes on fences, beams or gutters to block their usual routes.
2. Possums Eating Fruit, Vegetables or Plants
When possums are targeting your garden or orchard, combine solar water jet repellers, ultrasonic devices and physical barriers around key trees or garden beds. This creates both a psychological and physical deterrent.
3. Persistent or High-Population Problems
For ongoing or large-scale possum issues, use possum pellets in approved bait stations to reduce overall numbers. Pair this with repellers and spikes to stop new animals from moving in.
4. Humane, Non-Chemical Options
If you prefer not to use poisons, opt for ultrasonic repellers, motion-activated water jets and physical barriers as your primary control tools.
For best results, many New Zealand homeowners use a combination approach: repellers to keep possums away, spikes to block access and bait stations (where appropriate) to reduce populations over time.
Protect your property, garden and native plants with Pestrol’s proven possum control solutions, designed for New Zealand conditions.

Customer Reviews About Possums
Good quality product, not huge so the bigger one may be better, but caught 3 good sized cats. Easy to set and easy for cats to set off.
This is a great product. We had a problem with neighbours cats visiting and causing havoc in our garden. Got two of these, one for the front and inside the garden. So far no cats for the last two weeks.
Product works as advertised. Communication was a little lacking once order had been placed due to the product being on back order. BUT, communication was very reliable & efficient after enquiring about delivery times. Would use again.
I would describe this product as a brilliant idea, but poorly executed. It does scare cats, but is difficult to set up due to drawbacks in the design. In summary: (1) It is triggered by the movement of plants in the wind. It should only be triggered by warm bodies. (2) The sensitivity dial is too sensitive. The range 0 to 9 is more 0 to 3. (3) No timer. I had to buy a tap timer to control when the unit is active. I only want it active at night. (4) The solar panel is a great idea, but not helpful if you want to locate the unit at the back of the house. It would be helpful if there was an option to have a long cable to allow fixing the solar panel at roof level. (5) The connections leak, but can be fixed with plumbing tape. (6) The spray arc is too high and can shoot over a fence. Reducing tap pressure helps with (5) and (6). Only half a turn of the tap is needed.
Honestly should have bought this right from the beginning! Nothing worked long term to keep these nuisance neighbouring cats who refused to use anything that resembled a normal kitty litter in my garden. DIY , commercial sprays etc, they just got used to it . I like this because of the sensitivity levels other repellers don’t have, which means it won’t go off unnecessarily if you don’t want it to. Actual physical deterrents are needed I found to effectively deter cats. Chemical / smell deterrents are a waste of money and time .
The possums love them.
We visit our property once a week and for three weeks straight a dead possum has been waiting for us.
Works as advertised. Brilliant!
Works on sparrows and starlings but not the pigeons
Please to see there has not been any cats inside the section when it has been installed. Also no complaints from the neighbors.
