The Scarlet Runner Bean (Phaseolus coccineus) is a perennial bean that will remerge every Spring, the ‘scarlet’ red blooms develop into super tender long stringless pods.

How To Grow

  1. Sow vegetable seeds 25mm deep in dark damp soil – avoid watering for a day or two afterwards.
  2. Sow 15cm apart allowing 1m between rows.
  3. Support with canes, netting or trellis.
  4. Runner Beans develop an extensive root system so will be at their best in well dug and manured soil.
  5. Ensure the danger of frosts has passed and protect plants from wind.
  6. Water well and mulch well in dry periods, and spraying flowers gently will help the pods to set.
  7. Additional fertiliser is not required as legumes will produce their own nitrogen.
  8. Seedlings emerge after 7-10 days.
