How Does Brodifacoum Work?
Brodifacoum is a second-generation anticoagulant poison. It interferes with the normal clotting ability of blood and can accumulate in the liver, kidneys and fatty tissue of poisoned animals.
The delayed action means rats and mice do not normally associate the bait with the later effects of poisoning. Symptoms may not be apparent for several days after poisoning has occurred.
Continue checking and replenishing the bait station daily until the pellets cease to be eaten. Do not remove the bait after only one night of feeding.
How to Use Pestoff Rodent Pellets for Mice
- Place 50 to 100 pellets inside a Pestoff Mouse Bait Station or another suitable mouse bait station.
- Place stations in areas used by mice but out of reach of children, wildlife and non-target animals.
- Position stations in sheltered and warm areas.
- Useful locations include areas near or beneath refrigerators, stoves, hot-water cylinders and cupboards.
- Check bait stations daily.
- Replenish the pellets until feeding ceases.
- Repeat monitoring periodically to identify any reinfestation.
How to Use Pestoff Rodent Pellets for Rats
- Place 1 to 2 cups of pellets inside a Pestoff Dead Rat Café or another suitable rat bait station.
- Place stations in areas used by rats but out of reach of children, wildlife and non-target animals.
- Position stations along fixed rat runways beside walls, fences and banks.
- Stations may also be placed near rat burrows, droppings, gnaw marks and feeding areas.
- Check bait stations daily.

Where Should Bait Stations Be Placed?
Look for evidence showing where rats or mice are nesting, feeding or travelling. Common signs include:
- Rodent droppings
- Gnaw marks
- Damaged food or animal-feed packaging
- Greasy rub marks along walls
- Burrows or nesting material
- Scratching noises inside walls or ceilings
- Regular movement beside walls, fences or banks
Rats have relatively poor eyesight and commonly use fixed objects for navigation. Place rat bait stations directly along walls, banks, runways and near burrows rather than in exposed open areas.
Mice are commonly attracted to sheltered, warm areas near appliances, cupboards and stored materials. Place mouse bait stations close to walls and other protected edges.

Pestoff Pellets or Pestoff Blocks?
Pestoff Rodent Pellets and Pestoff Rodent Blocks both contain 0.02g/kg brodifacoum and are designed to control rats and mice.
- Choose pellets when using an enclosed station designed to hold loose bait.
- Choose blocks when using a station with a rod or fixing point that allows the bait to be secured.
- Blocks may be preferable in exposed outdoor stations where loose pellets could be more vulnerable to moisture or removal.

Secondary-Poisoning Risk
Brodifacoum can accumulate in the liver, kidneys and fatty tissue of poisoned animals. Dogs, cats and wildlife may be poisoned if they eat rats or mice that have consumed the bait.
Collect poisoned rodent carcasses wherever practical. Dispose of them according to the product label. Where burial is permitted, carcasses should be buried at least 600mm below ground to reduce access by scavenging animals.
Use in Public-Access Areas
If Pestoff Rodent Pellets are used in an area where the public has a right of access, warning signs must be displayed to notify the public that poison has been applied.
The signs must remain in place for 12 months after the product has been removed or destroyed. Always comply with the product label and any applicable legal requirements.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store Pestoff Rodent Pellets in their original labelled container, tightly closed and away from food, animal feed, children and domestic animals. Do not store the product in direct sunlight.
Shelf life may vary depending on storage conditions. Do not use product after the expiry date printed on the container. Dispose of expired bait according to the product label.
Accidental Poisoning
Symptoms of brodifacoum poisoning may not become apparent for several days. Possible symptoms include:
- Pale gums
- Blood in urine or faeces
- Unusual bruising
If human poisoning is suspected, do not induce vomiting. Contact a doctor, emergency physician or the New Zealand National Poisons Centre immediately on 0800 POISON (0800 764 766).
If a pet or livestock animal may have consumed the pellets or a poisoned rodent, contact a veterinarian immediately. Vitamin K1 is an effective antidote when administered under veterinary direction. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
Spill and Disposal Information
If pellets are spilled, isolate the area and prevent the product from entering streams, drains or waterways. Collect spilled material and place it inside a secure, appropriately labelled container.
Dispose of spoiled, expired or unwanted product according to the label and applicable local requirements. Do not reuse the empty container for any other purpose.
